India International School in Japan (IISJ) Guide 2026: CBSE, IB Diploma, 2026-27 Fees and Admissions (figure) English Articles

India International School in Japan (IISJ) is a CBSE school, following India’s national curriculum, with a main campus in Koto-ku, Tokyo, and a second campus in Midori-ku, Yokohama. It opened in 2004, teaches in English from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in Tokyo, and offers the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12 as an alternative to the CBSE senior years. If you are an Indian family on assignment in Japan, or want a CBSE education for your child, it is probably on your list.

This guide is based on the school’s Tokyo and Yokohama websites, its IB Diploma Programme Handbook 2026-2028, the MEXT IB consortium list and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s international schools portal, all checked on 26 September 2026. One note: IISJ is a different school from Global Indian International School (GIIS) Tokyo, so please do not mix up their fees or programmes.

The curriculum: CBSE first, with the IB as a senior option

IISJ is, first and foremost, a CBSE school. Its admissions page says it follows “the national Indian curriculum”, and CBSE students in Grades 10 and 12 sit the Board Exams, just as they would in India. For a family who may move back to India, or on to another CBSE school, that continuity is a real comfort.

Curriculum structure at India International School in Japan from Kindergarten to Grade 12, with CBSE and IB Diploma options in Grades 11-12
Figure 1: Curriculum structure at IISJ, Kindergarten to Grade 12 (from the IISJ website and IB Handbook 2026-2028)

As Figure 1 shows, the choice between the two senior pathways comes at Grade 11:

  • Kindergarten: a three-year programme (Kindergarten and Upper Kindergarten) using the Montessori Method.
  • Grades 1-10: the CBSE curriculum in Elementary (Grades 1-5), Middle (Grades 6-8) and Secondary School (Grades 9-10), ending with the Grade 10 Board Exams.
  • Grades 11-12, CBSE Senior Secondary: all students take English plus four subjects from one of three streams: Science, Commerce or Humanities. Options include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy and Computer Science (Python).
  • Grades 11-12, IB Diploma Programme: the school states that “IB classes are offered to students in Grades 11 and 12 only.”

The school’s contact form lists “Senior Secondary (Grades 11-12)” and “International Baccalaureate (Grades 11-12)” as separate programmes, so in practice families choose one or the other. Whether an IB student can also sit the CBSE Grade 12 Board Exams is not stated, so please ask the school.

Which campus offers the IB?

Based on the published information, the IB Diploma is taught at the Tokyo campus. MEXT lists the school under Tokyo, and the Yokohama website serves Kindergarten to Grade 11, with no IB option on its contact form. If you live in Yokohama and are thinking about the IB, please confirm the arrangements for Grades 11 and 12 with the school.

The IB Diploma Programme at IISJ

MEXT’s IB consortium list (as of 30 June 2026) shows India International School in Japan as authorised for the Diploma Programme only. On timing, the school’s own pages use slightly different wording: its IB page says “IISJ has been an IB candidate school since 2013”, while its history page says it received “an accreditation to offer International Baccalaureate classes in 2015”. We could not open the IB organisation’s school page to confirm the exact authorisation date, so we have not stated one here.

Subjects offered for 2026-2028

According to the IB Diploma Programme Handbook 2026-2028, students take six subjects, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL): one from each of Groups 1-5, plus a sixth in place of an arts subject:

Group Subjects listed for 2026-2028
Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature English A: Language and Literature; Japanese A: Language and Literature (SL/HL)
Group 2: Language Acquisition English B, Japanese B (SL/HL); Japanese ab initio
Group 3: Individuals and Societies Global Politics, Business Management, Economics
Group 4: Sciences Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science (SL/HL)
Group 5: Mathematics Mathematics: analysis and approaches; Mathematics: applications and interpretation (SL/HL)
Group 6: The Arts and Electives No arts subject listed; a second subject from Group 3, 4 or 5 is taken instead
Core Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

The list is compact, with no arts subject and no Hindi course. On the plus side, the handbook notes that a student taking English A together with Japanese A can qualify for a bilingual IB Diploma, provided they obtain at least a grade 3 in both subjects.

Results

IISJ does not publish IB Diploma results (pass rates or average points). The most recent CBSE figures on the school website are from 2019: of 50+ students who sat the Class XII (AISSCE) exams in 2019, the top score was 95.2%, 8 students scored 90% or above and 26 earned distinctions. Please ask for the latest figures when you visit.

University destinations

The school’s College Placements page lists universities where graduates have enrolled, including Kyoto University, Nagoya University, Tohoku University and Waseda University in Japan; the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia in Canada; UC Berkeley and the University of Michigan in the US; the University of Edinburgh; and NIT Delhi and Vellore Institute of Technology in India. It gives no years or numbers and does not separate IB from CBSE graduates.

The school’s 2026-2027 Tuition and Fees page for the Tokyo campus lists these amounts:

First-year costs at IISJ Tokyo campus by grade, 2026-2027
Figure 2: First-year costs at the Tokyo campus by grade, 2026-2027, excluding bus (from the IISJ 2026-2027 Tuition and Fees page)

Adding up tuition and the items listed for each grade (excluding the bus), a new student’s first year at the Tokyo campus in 2026-27 comes to about ¥650,000 in Kindergarten, ¥655,000 in Grades 1-8, ¥650,000 in Grade 9, ¥1,270,000 in Grade 10, ¥1,295,000 in Grade 11 and ¥1,345,000 in Grade 12 on the CBSE track. The Grades 1-8 total is approximate (uniform).

IB Diploma fees

The IB Diploma has its own fee structure, set out in the IB Handbook 2026-2028 and the school’s IB Programme Fee Structure sheet: an application fee of ¥10,000 and an IB registration fee of ¥20,000 at admission; a tuition fee of ¥1,500,000, paid in two instalments of ¥750,000 by 15 May and 15 November; and an IB Diploma examination fee of ¥160,000 in Grade 12 only, notified in the second half of Grade 12. The handbook notes that IB fees may change with exchange rates. It does not say whether the ¥1,500,000 tuition covers one year or the full two years, or whether the general items such as textbooks and insurance also apply, so please confirm this with the school before you budget.

Yokohama campus fees

The Yokohama campus publishes its own 2026-2027 fees: ¥600,000 a year for Kindergarten to Grade 10 and ¥700,000 for Grade 11, with a ¥10,000 registration fee and similar additional items. The school bus costs ¥150,000 (round trip) on the listed station routes and ¥200,000 for other Yokohama areas.

Refunds and discounts

The Tokyo fees page states that tuition, registration and bus fee refunds “will not be honored at any time”. Withdrawing requires one month’s notice, otherwise a one-month fee of ¥60,000 is charged. The FAQ says there are no sibling discounts, though prospective kindergarten students may sometimes receive a discount.

Admissions

Who the school is for

IISJ is open about its priorities. Its admissions page says the school “caters primarily to the Indian expat community in Japan”, and that “Admission of non-Indian nationals is subject to our policy of maintaining a balance in nationalities, gender, and ability in each classroom.” The Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s portal adds that priority is given to Indian nationals and other foreign nationals, and that Japanese nationals must be returnees.

English requirements

English is the language of instruction, and because of the rigour of the CBSE curriculum, the school says students “must have a high degree of English competency.” There is also a requirement for parents: “At least one parent of all prospective students must speak fluent English.” The website does not describe an English-support programme, so please ask at the interview if your child is still building their English.

How to apply

Admissions steps at India International School in Japan
Figure 3: The IISJ application process (from the IISJ Apply page and Tuition and Fees page)

As Figure 3 shows:

  • Apply online: the school says applicants “MUST apply online” and asks families to answer every question, or the application may be delayed.
  • Review: the Admissions Committee reviews the application. Replies can take weeks.
  • Interview: if the candidate is accepted, parents receive an email to arrange an interview, which the child attends with the parents. The Tokyo portal also mentions exams as part of selection.
  • What to bring to the interview: the registration, books and uniform fees, the Transfer Certificate, the latest report card and passport copies.

The school does not publish fixed application deadlines or age cut-off dates for each grade. The school year starts in April; ask the school directly about mid-year entry.

School life and support

The Tokyo campus moved into a new five-storey building in spring 2023, with chemistry and physics labs, a library, a cafeteria, a gym and a soccer field (school’s Tokyo page); there is no swimming pool (Tokyo portal). The portal lists Hindi, Nepali, Tamil, Japanese and French alongside English, and primary nationalities including India, Nepal, Japan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The FAQ mentions after-school clubs and after-school care until 4:00 pm for Kindergarten and Grade 1.

Questions parents often ask

We are not Indian. Can our child apply?

Yes, but places for non-Indian nationals depend on the school’s policy of balancing nationalities, gender and ability in each class. Children of many nationalities attend. Japanese nationals must be returnees, according to the Tokyo portal.

Can graduates go to Japanese universities?

The school says that as a MEXT-designated international school since 2019, its graduates can enrol at Japanese colleges and universities, and past destinations include Kyoto, Nagoya, Tohoku and Waseda. Each university sets its own entry requirements.

Summary

  • A CBSE school first: India’s national curriculum from Kindergarten (Montessori) to Grade 12, with CBSE Board Exams in Grades 10 and 12.
  • IB Diploma only, in Grades 11-12: MEXT lists the school as authorised for the DP only (as of 30 June 2026), taught at the Tokyo campus.
  • Modest 2026-27 fees: ¥600,000 a year up to Grade 9 and ¥1,200,000 for Grades 10-12 in Tokyo; the IB Diploma tuition is listed at ¥1,500,000 (period not stated), plus a ¥160,000 exam fee in Grade 12. Tuition, registration and bus fees are non-refundable.
  • Admission priorities: aimed primarily at the Indian expat community, with a nationality balance policy, strong English required and at least one parent fluent in English.
  • Results not published: there are no IB Diploma results on the website, so ask for the latest CBSE and IB figures when you visit.

If IISJ sounds right, the next step is to fill in the online application at iisjapan.com and, if you are considering the IB Diploma, to ask the school about the IB fee details and subject availability for your child’s intake year.
