Enishi International School Nagoya Guide 2026: IB PYP, MYP and DP, 2026-27 Fees and Admissions (figure) English Articles

Enishi International School (EIS) is an English-medium international school in Nishi-ku, Nagoya, a short walk from Nagoya Station. It takes children from age 1 in its Early Learning Center right through to Grade 12, and it is authorised to offer all three main IB programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). If you want an IB school in Nagoya that your child can stay in from the early years to university entrance, it is likely on your shortlist.

This guide is based on the school’s official website and Admissions Handbook and the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT) IB consortium list, all checked on 26 September 2026. Fees and procedures change each year, so please confirm details with the Admissions Office before you apply.

The IB programmes: a full continuum from age 3 to 18

The MEXT IB consortium list (as of 30 June 2026) shows Enishi with all three of the PYP, MYP and DP, and the school states that it is “authorized to offer” each one. The PYP was authorised in 2019, the MYP in 2021 and the DP in 2022 (the school announced DP authorisation as of 4 July 2022). None of the three is at the “candidate” (pre-authorisation) stage.

Here is how the years fit together, according to the school’s Admission Policy page and FAQ:

  • Early Learning Center (ages 1 to 6): Foundation 1 and 2 classes (for 1- and 2-year-olds) follow the UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), and the Preschool, Pre-K and Kindergarten classes follow the PYP.
  • Primary School (Grades 1 to 5): the PYP, built around six transdisciplinary themes.
  • Middle School (Grades 6 to 10): the MYP, a five-year programme.
  • High School (Grades 11 and 12): the DP, or the school’s own EIS Diploma pathway described below.
Programme structure at Enishi International School from the Early Learning Center to Grade 12
Figure 1: Programme structure at Enishi International School, age 1 to Grade 12 (from the school’s Admission Policy page and FAQ, and the MEXT IB consortium list)

So a child can move from the PYP to the MYP and the DP without changing schools.

Two pathways in Grades 11 and 12

The school’s High School page describes two graduation pathways, and both lead to the EIS Diploma:

  • The IBDP pathway: the full IB Diploma, with six subjects plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
  • The EIS Diploma / IB Certificate pathway: according to the school’s Admissions Handbook (PDF posted May 2025), these students still follow the IBDP curriculum with fewer CAS hours, are not required to complete the Extended Essay or TOK, and may take a few IB courses and receive certificates for the exams they complete.

DP subjects currently offered

Subjects “may vary year by year”. The High School page lists English and Japanese Language and Literature, Japanese Language Acquisition, Business Studies, Economics, History, Physics, Biology, Environmental Systems and Societies, Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, and Film (online), so check the list against your child’s university plans.

Students from another IB DP school may join during the first term of Grade 11, but those from MYP or non-MYP schools must start in August (Admissions Handbook).

DP results and university destinations

We could not find published DP results (average scores or pass rates) or university destinations for Enishi graduates. If these matter to you, please ask the school directly.

Tuition and fees for 2026-2027

Let’s be honest about the costs, because they shape the decision for most families. The figures below come from the school’s Tuition & Fees page for the 2026-2027 academic year. The school notes that fees are subject to change according to its operational needs and individual student needs.

Fee (2026-2027) Amount (JPY) When
Application fee ¥30,000 One-time, with each application
Enrollment fee ¥250,000 One-time, within one month of confirmation
Building fee ¥350,000 One-time, non-refundable
Annual maintenance fee ¥175,000 Every year
Tuition: Foundation 1 (3 / 4 / 5 days) and Foundation 2 (4 / 5 days) ¥1,274,000 / ¥1,400,000 / ¥1,575,000 and ¥1,400,000 / ¥1,575,000 Annual
Tuition: Preschool, Pre-K and Kindergarten (5 days) ¥1,575,000 Annual
Tuition: Primary School (Grades 1-5) ¥2,050,000 Annual
Tuition: Middle School (Grades 6-10) ¥2,300,000 Annual
Tuition: High School (Grades 11-12) ¥2,400,000 Annual
IB Diploma Programme supplement ¥150,000 Annual, Grades 11-12 on the IBDP pathway
EAL support (only if required) ¥300,000 Annual

Tuition, EAL and bus fees are paid by bank transfer in three instalments split 40 / 30 / 30 (August-December, January-March, April-June); for Primary School that is ¥820,000, ¥615,000 and ¥615,000.

Enishi International School first-year costs for new students by division, 2026-2027
Figure 2: First-year costs for new students by division, 2026-2027 (tuition + IBDP supplement where applicable + maintenance fee + one-time fees; from the school’s Tuition & Fees page)

What does the first year cost?

A new student pays ¥630,000 in one-time fees (application, enrollment and building) plus the ¥175,000 maintenance fee, which is ¥805,000 on top of tuition. At 2026-27 rates, the first year therefore comes to:

  • Preschool, Pre-K or Kindergarten (5 days): ¥1,575,000 + ¥805,000 = ¥2,380,000
  • Primary School: ¥2,050,000 + ¥805,000 = ¥2,855,000
  • Middle School: ¥2,300,000 + ¥805,000 = ¥3,105,000
  • High School, IBDP pathway: ¥2,400,000 + ¥150,000 + ¥805,000 = ¥3,355,000 (¥3,205,000 without the IBDP supplement)

From the second year, the ongoing cost is tuition plus the maintenance fee (and the IBDP supplement where applicable): ¥1,750,000 for a five-day ELC class, ¥2,225,000 in Primary, ¥2,475,000 in Middle School and ¥2,725,000 for an IBDP student. None of these include the bus, uniform, lunch or EAL support.

Other costs and discounts

  • School bus (2026-27, annual): round trip ¥250,000 to ¥315,000, one way ¥130,000 to ¥165,000, depending on the zone.
  • Uniform and lunch: uniform is compulsory, priced by the items you order; lunch can be ordered daily or brought from home.
  • Sibling discounts: the fees page lists 5% off tuition for the second and third child and 20% off for the fourth. The FAQ mentions only the 5%, so confirm the terms. There are currently no scholarships (FAQ).
  • Refunds: tuition is refunded only if admission is not granted or a student is absent for a whole term with prior notice; the other fees are non-refundable.

Fixed amounts for IB exam fees or devices are not shown, so ask about these.

Admissions: timing, age and English

When can you apply?

Enishi accepts new students throughout the year when there is a vacancy, and the How to Apply page says students may apply within one year of the proposed start date. The Admission Policy notes that most children are admitted by August, and the FAQ says open houses are held in November and February. The exception is the DP: students from non-DP schools must start Grade 11 in August.

Age and grade placement

A child must reach the appropriate age for the grade before 1 September of that academic year: for example, age 3 for Preschool, 6 for Grade 1 and 16 for Grade 11. The Admission Policy allows an “exceptional admission” for a child born on or after 1 September with exceptional academic skills and appropriate social maturity, subject to interview and school records.

The application steps

Enishi International School application steps
Figure 3: The application process, from school visit to confirming enrolment (from the school’s How to Apply and FAQ pages)
  • Visit: the school strongly recommends a campus visit (Zoom is possible if you cannot come).
  • Online application: by the family interview, submit proof of the ¥30,000 application fee, a passport-size photo, a passport, birth certificate or health insurance card, and previous report cards. For Grade 2 and above, a confidential recommendation letter from the current school, in a sealed envelope, is required; for Kindergarten and Grade 1 the Handbook describes it as beneficial.
  • Interview and assessment: the child meets teachers and parents meet the principal; Primary and Secondary applicants usually take the MAP test and the WIDA Screener, followed by a one-day class trial.
  • Decision: within one to two weeks; families confirm within ten days of an offer.

English requirements and EAL support

The school’s Admissions Handbook (PDF posted May 2025) sets entry levels on the WIDA Screener, an English proficiency test scored from 1 to 6: no requirement for the ELC and Grades 1-2, then an overall score of 2.0 for Grades 3-5, 3 for Grades 6-8, 4 for Grades 9-10, and 5 for Grades 11-12 (IB DP), plus MAP Language Usage and Reading scores of around 220.

Figure 4: English entry levels by grade on the WIDA Screener (from the Enishi Admissions Handbook, PDF posted May 2025)

If a student’s overall score is no more than 1 point below the required level, the final decision is made after an interview with an English teacher. Any student scoring below 4 overall must receive EAL (English as an Additional Language) support. The FAQ explains that EAL is offered from Primary School upwards, is mandatory when needed and carries an additional fee (¥300,000 a year for 2026-27 on the Tuition & Fees page), with one-to-one or small-group teaching. The Handbook was last updated in 2023, so ask whether these thresholds still apply.

Other conditions to know

  • Residence: students must live full-time in Japan with at least one parent or legal guardian.
  • Learning needs: share any special educational needs before admission; if the school cannot accommodate them, it will try to direct you to more suitable provision (Handbook).
  • ELC status: the Handbook notes that the ELC is a non-licensed childcare facility (ninkagai hoiku shisetsu); families with a local subsidy can get a receipt.

Learning support and student life

Japanese language. A real strength for bilingual families. Primary students have Japanese every day in two groups: Kokugo for native speakers, which follows the national curriculum and covers the same kanji as public schools, and JAL (Japanese as an Additional Language). In the MYP, Japanese is offered as Language Acquisition or Language and Literature, six periods a week.

Before and after school. The ELC offers paid extended care before and after school (8:00-8:15 and 15:30-18:00; ¥1,000 per 30 minutes in 2025-26, according to the Handbook), and Primary and Secondary students can use a paid Study Hall from 15:30 to 16:30. Daily clubs run from 15:40 to 16:20; most are free or charge only material fees.

Getting there

The school’s contact page gives these walking times: 12 minutes from Nagoya Station (or 5 minutes by city bus number 13), 9 minutes from Kamejima Station on the Higashiyama Line and 12 minutes from Sengencho Station on the Tsurumai Line. There is no car parking on campus, but there is a drive-through drop-off area, and older students may cycle.

Questions parents often ask

My child does not speak English yet. Can they still join?

For the ELC and Grades 1 and 2, the Admissions Handbook sets no English requirement, and EAL support is available from Primary School upwards for an additional fee. From Grade 3 there is a minimum WIDA score, rising with age, so older children need more English on entry.

We are a Japanese family. Is there anything special to consider?

The Handbook says that “Foreign students, and students previously enrolled at EIS who are returning from abroad will be given priority in the waiting pool”. Also, Enishi is not an “Article 1” school, and MEXT’s IB list notes that Japanese parents have a duty to enrol children of compulsory school age in an Article 1 school, so please consider the implications for Grades 1 to 9 before applying.

Does every High School student have to do the full IB Diploma?

No. The EIS Diploma / IB Certificate pathway is an alternative, and only the IBDP pathway carries the ¥150,000 supplement.

Summary

  • Full IB continuum in central Nagoya: PYP, MYP and DP all authorised (MEXT list, as of 30 June 2026); the school takes children from age 1, and the IB continuum runs from Preschool (age 3) to Grade 12.
  • 2026-27 fees: tuition from ¥1,274,000 (Foundation 1, three days) to ¥2,400,000 (High School), plus ¥150,000 for the IBDP, ¥175,000 maintenance each year and ¥630,000 in one-time fees.
  • First-year totals: ¥2,855,000 in Primary, ¥3,105,000 in Middle School and ¥3,355,000 for a new IBDP student, before bus, uniform and lunch.
  • Rolling admissions: all year when places are free, with a 1 September age cut-off; students from non-DP schools start Grade 11 in August.
  • English matters more with age: no requirement up to Grade 2, rising to WIDA 5 for Grades 11-12 (IB DP), with paid EAL support from Primary School.

If Enishi sounds like a good fit, book a school visit or open house and ask the Admissions Office to confirm fees and English requirements for your child’s entry grade.
